Over two thousand years ago, a small group of everyday men and women, disciples of a Jewish Rabbi named Jesus, against all odds, captured the attention of the entire ancient world. When gathered, they were known as “the Church”, and when scattered the outside world saw them, their power, and their love for one another as remarkable, even counter cultural.

Since then, the church has continued to endure, grow and transform the world surrounding it – fulfilling the promise of its founder, Jesus. The church has changed the world - but there is still a great deal that needs changing. With God’s grace and your help - we can be a part of bringing about that change to the broken world around us.

This Teaching Notes & Small Group Guides pack includes everything you will need to teach this 9-week series at your church, from editable teaching notes to weekly small group discussion guides.

Series Topics

Week 1 – A Church Healed
Does it seem like the world is getting better or worse? Jesus, who lived at a time and in a culture that may have been even darker than ours, said that one of the most important things about us is who we say He is. You may have been hurt by people - but you’ve never been hurt by Jesus. Join us as we work to heal past our hurts together and see the local church through the lens of Christ all over again

Week 2 – A Church Unified
You can tell a lot about what matters to someone by how they live, and Jesus is no exception. Throughout Jesus’ life and ministry, He brought people together. Sinners and religious people, Jews and Gentiles, women, and men — people from all backgrounds, ages, and races drew near to Jesus. Before Jesus returned to heaven, He prayed that we would experience the same unity He has with God the Father and the Holy Spirit. Jesus prayed for unity, so we will pursue it. Like Jesus, we will surround ourselves with people who are not like us. Being the same is easy. But being unified brings God glory.

Week 3 – A Church Family
The Church is plan-a and there is no plan-b because plan-a works! Whether it’s depression, anxiety, or the parts of our life we struggle to be honest about, we all long to be known and needed. The good news is that Spiritual Family is the remedy, and this remedy comes with a guarantee! Let’s look at what it means to belong to a spiritual family together.

Week 4 – A Church Body
After looking at what it means to belong to a spiritual family in the last message, it’s important to remember the part we play in that spiritual family. Not only are we now a part of God’s plan with full opportunity to experience His power, we are also a part of His people, and what we are a part of is so much bigger than just us! Join us to learn how we need the body as much as the body needs us.

Week 5 – A Church That Sees
Like an old, rusty machine that no longer serves the purpose it was created for, a church that is no longer living out its purpose is a rotten thing. Much like how our physical vision gets worse over time, the people who make up a church often have a hard time keeping their eyes fixed on their God-given purpose over time. We drift. But hope is not lost. Through Jesus and His word, we can begin to see all over again! Let’s remember to see the way that God sees.

Week 6 – A Church That Prays
Between work, bills, little league, and more - life is just so busy these days. No wonder so many of us struggle to pray regularly! The truth is, we have plenty of good explanations and no good excuse. When we stop seeing prayer as something we’re called to do and start seeing it as how we’re called to live, our world changes.

Week 7 – A Church That Worships
What comes to your mind when you think about worship? Music? Singing? Maybe even your favorite sports team! Worship is our response to what we value most. So why can it be hard to worship God? Simply put, what rules our heart rules our life. Let’s learn together how worship is more than just a song we sing but a posture from which we live our life!

Week 8 – A Church That Listens
Noise. It’s everywhere. Coming out of our phones, blaring through car windows beside us on the freeway, and distracting us from the things in life that God wants us to hear. The antidote for a mediocre life that feels distant from God is to slow down, tune out the distractions around us, and listen to Him. Join us as we learn how, the quieter we get, the more we’re able to hear God.

Week 9 – A Church That Lasts
Jesus said that even the gates of Hell would never stand against THE Church - but He never made such a promise about YOUR church. We all know it. There are churches that last and churches that don’t. What’s the difference? Let’s learn together how the Spiritual Families that create lasting change are the ones who desire to leave a Legacy for Jesus above all else.
